Petition filed against Gotabaya demanding that arrest be prevented

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has filed a petition with the Court of Appeal seeking to prevent his arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in connection with the investigations into the Easter attacks. 

The petition was filed today (16) through Attorney-at-Law Sanath Wijewardene. 

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), CID Director Shani Abeysekara and several CID officers have been named as respondents in the petition. 

Prior to this petition, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had imposed a travel ban on Gotabaya Rajapaksa and three others on June 3, 2026.
