We don't need a bullying city council.

The incident occurred at the Ambalangoda Municipal Council meeting. There, UNP MP Janith Wickramathilake accused the Municipal Council Chairman Asela Godahewa of taking Ambalangoda to the underworld.

That statement is a very serious statement.

The Ambalangoda Municipal Council Chairman represents the National People's Power. The National People's Power is a political force centered on the JVP. MP Janith Wickramathilake may have made such an accusation against the Chairman keeping in mind the political history of the JVP.

Thirty to forty years have passed since the JVP entered democratic politics.  It is not that MP Janith Wickramathilake is unaware that no criminal activity has been reported so far by an activist associated with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna within or outside the Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha area during that time.

⁣When J.R. Jayewardene amended the Constitution and signed agreements with India, shaking the territorial integrity of the country, it is impossible for MP Janith Wickramathilake to not know who set fire to the Ambalangoda bus depot amid public protests in the country. 

The underworld of the then government, which was acting in an ulterior motive to build its own private bus business, set fire to that bus depot.

 The one who broke the arms and legs of Ganga Sahadara, who was the JVP organizer in Ambalangoda, was also a member of the elephant mark underworld. Who is that? MP Janith Wickramathilake knows what the political family background of that underworld is. 

MP Janith Wickramathilake has also forgotten about the political underworld that shocked Ambalangoda during the Rajapaksa politics, leaving aside the elephant mark. MP Janith Wickramathilake, who did not speak out against the underworld in those days, has now created the background to do politics without fear. 

However, the people of Ambalangoda have not appointed public representatives to the Municipal Council to wrestle. Party colors do not matter to the people. If the Municipal Council Act is read exactly, there is no mention of opposition groups in it. 

 If the representatives representing the Municipal Council are interested in wrestling and boxing, they can earn a good income by going down to the Municipal Council grounds and holding that show.

The expectation of the people of the city is the welfare of the city. In that case, the politics of the city are not relevant to the citizens. Therefore, it would be very good if the Upasaka Upasikas representing the Municipal Council think about the people first and discard color politics at the Municipal Council meeting and fulfill the objectives and expectations mentioned in the Municipal Council Act.

All of these people should remember that Sections 4 and 5 of the Municipal Council Act, which is Chapter 255, state as follows:

 4. The Municipal Council established for each city shall be the local government body entrusted with the proper control and administration of all matters relating to public health, public utilities, and public roads within the limits of the city, and generally for the enjoyment, convenience and welfare of the people and the protection and improvement of the amenities of the city, subject to the powers assigned or vested in any other authority by this Ordinance or any other written law. 

5(1) Every Municipal Council shall consist of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman and such other members as the Minister may, by order published in the Gazette, determine.
